St. Catharines Standard ON

The St. Catharines Standard was first published April 21, 1891. The newspaper was founded by William Bartlett Burgoyne, and remained in the hands of generations of the Burgoyne family until its sale to the Southam newspaper chain in 1996. Over its lengthy history, The Standard has become a significant media voice in Niagara Region and beyond.

In 1998, the Southam newspapers were sold to Conrad Black, and The Standard was sold again to Quebecor-owned Sun Media, which in turn was acquired by Postmedia. In 2017, the newspaper was sold for a fourth time to Torstar Corporation, which also publishes the Toronto Star, The Hamilton Spectator, the Waterloo Region Record, The Welland Tribune, The Niagara Falls Review, The Peterborough Examiner, Metroland community newspapers and several other media properties.

Torstar was acquired in 2020 by Nordstar Capital, an entity owned by Toronto businessmen Jordan Bitove and Paul Rivett.The Standard publishes a print publication six days a week, Monday – Saturday, servicing St. Catharines and surrounding Niagara communities. It also provides an ePaper, an electronic replica of the printed product. In addition, The Standard publishes ongoing news and information to a global audience on www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/.
