CURE Childhood Cancer
When CURE was founded in 1975, the survival rates for children diagnosed with cancer were very low. With focused and collaborative research, those rates have steadily risen to above 80%. However, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children, and studies show that more than 95% of childhood cancer survivors will have significant health issues by the time they are 45 years old.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) was established to spearhead the global fight against cancer and has been a driving force behind scientific progress in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. However, despite its achievements, children with cancer have been left behind in terms of research funding
As shocking as it may seem, only 5% of the NCI’s research budget is dedicated to childhood cancers, resulting in a lack of progress in developing effective treatments for children with cancer. As a result, children with cancer are often left with outdated treatment options that have not advanced at the same rate as those for adults. CURE is a leading pediatric cancer charity that exists to fill that gap.
