The SER is both a union and a very old professional association that has often been able to anticipate problems and raise many in-depth reflections. It brings together the following cantonal associations: AVECO, SPVAL, SPV, SPG, SPFF, AMCOFF, SAEN, SEJB and SEJ. In 1864, an association was created under the name of Société des Instituteurs Romands (SIR). It became Société Pédagogique Romande (SPR) in 1889, when schoolteachers were statutorily admitted as members of the society.

In 1998, it merged with the Cartel romand des associations d'enseignants secondaires et professionnels (CARESP) to become the Syndicat des enseignants romands (SER) and on August 29, 2020, the Syndicat des enseignantes et enseignants de Suisse romande. Its press organ, L'Educateur, was founded in 1865. From the beginning of its activity, our French-speaking umbrella organization has placed the well-being of students, especially those from disadvantaged social classes, the search for progress in pedagogy, and the improvement of the status and training of the teaching staff at the center of its concerns. A congress has been regularly organized since 1866. The reports, published on the occasion of each congress, have brought new ideas that have often influenced the development of the school.
