Woodward News

The current version of the Woodward News was established in 1984 by Woodward businessman J. Leon Fetzer, but the name itself has a colorful history in Northwest Oklahoma.

Ninety years earlier, on Jun 1, 1894, the original Woodward News printed its maiden issue. Moving beyond its early status as a railroad depot on the Fort Reno-Fort Supply military road, Woodward had become a trading hub in the northwest quadrant of Oklahoma Territory.

The News was published and edited by Will E. "Billy" Bolton, one of the founders and promoters of Woodward. That paper published until July 30, 1909.

Several newspapers took up the slack and two of them eventually incorporated into what is now the Woodward News.

The Lawrence family started the Woodward Daily Press in 1923 and published for 62 years and the Woodward County Journal, a weekly, was established in 1932 by Judge H. B. King. The Journal eventually became the Woodward News and in 1985, the tabloid-size morning daily purchased the older afternoon Woodward Daily Press.

The News was sold in 1988 to American Publishing Company and several years later became part of the CNHI, LLC family that serves more than 130 communities throughout the United States with its various publications.

The News publishes 3 mornings a week - Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, covering the news of the day in Woodward and surrounding counties.
