Welland Tribune ON

Reaches 87,968 People per Month

The Tribune was first published in Welland 1863, after having been established in 1854 in Fonthill Dr. John Fraser. A. Dunsmore obtained ownership and moved the newspaper to Welland which had become the county seat, originally naming the publication the People’s Press before changing it to The Welland Tribune. Several changes of ownership brought the newspaper into the possession of J.J. Sidey who firmly established the publication as the primary local news voice in southern Niagara.

The Tribune amalgamated with the Welland Telegraph under the ownership of Louis Blake Duff in 1920, and in 1929 purchased the Port Colborne Citizen, becoming for a time the Welland-Port Colborne Evening Tribune. Private ownership the The Tribune continued until 1943 when it was purchased by Roy Thomson, becoming one of the first newspapers purchased by the Thomson media company outside northern Ontario. Thomson sold The Tribune to Conrad Black’s Hollinger in 1995 and it was sold again in 2000 when Hollinger’s publishing assets were sold to Canwest.

In 2003, Osprey Media purchased the Tribune which was sold again to Quebecor-owned Sun Media, which in turn was acquired by Postmedia. In 2017, the newspaper was sold to Torstar Corporation, which also publishes the Toronto Star, The Hamilton Spectator, the Waterloo Region Record, The Welland Tribune, The Niagara Falls Review, The Peterborough Examiner, Metroland community newspapers and several other media properties. Torstar is owned by Nordstar Capital, which is owned by Toronto business leader Jordan Bitove. The Tribune publishes a print publication six days a week, Monday – Saturday, servicing Welland, Port Colborne, Pelham and Wainfleet. It also provides an ePaper, an electronic replica of the printed product. In addition, The Tribune publishes ongoing news and information to a global audience on www.wellandtribune.ca/.
