The Diamondback is the independent student-run campus newspaper at the University of Maryland. Originally published in 1909 as The Triangle, it was renamed in 1920 to honor the school's mascot. During the fall and spring semesters, the newspaper is printed Monday through Thursday and a digital edition is published on Fridays. During the summer, it is published once a week. The newspaper gained independence from the university in 1971 after the Board of Regents censored the publication’s Vietnam War coverage. The newspaper published blank pages in protest and ran tombstones on the editorial pages. When the Board of Regents stopped funding the newspaper, Maryland Media, Inc. was created to fund The Diamondback.
