The Ethel
The Ethel is a celebration of women embracing the power and privilege of aging, created specifically for those 55 and older. Named in honor of AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus, our free weekly newsletter, website, and online community are inspired by her belief that “old age is not a defeat, but a victory, not a punishment, but a privilege.”
Andrus, born in 1884, was a visionary and tireless advocate who worked to improve the lives of older Americans by fighting for better health care, financial security, and essential services.
Following in her footsteps, The Ethel seeks to amplify the voices of older women, empowering them to share their stories and show the world that they are far from invisible. Women today are rewriting the narrative of aging, proving every day that it’s a time of reinvention, strength, and joy. Together, we’re breaking down outdated stereotypes, owning the conversation around growing older, and building a community where we can be loud, be heard, and be seen.
We’re here to support and inspire women to live their fullest lives—offering engaging stories and real-talk advice on topics that matter: sex, health, beauty, careers, ageism, and more. We celebrate all that aging brings—the wisdom, the freedom, the resilience—while also acknowledging the real challenges it can present to our minds, bodies, and relationships.
AARP, which celebrated 60 years of service in 2018, continues to empower people to live life on their own terms as they age. With a strong national presence and deep local roots, AARP helps turn aspirations into action, focusing on what matters most: health, wealth, and self. Whether you’re one of the 38 million members or simply share in our mission, AARP’s work touches people from all walks of life, across all generations.
